Does Dark Skin Need Sunscreen? Here’s What Science Says

If you have dark skin, you may have grown up barely thinking about sunscreen. Now skincare culture seems to insist that SPF belongs in every routine, every day, no exceptions. So what does the evidence actually say for Black and darker skin and if pigmentation is what you care about most, are we even asking the right question?


For a long time, sunscreen was not really part of the conversation for many Black people. You put it on at the beach, perhaps. You packed it for a holiday somewhere particularly hot. If you grew up somewhere like Lagos, Accra or Nairobi, where sunshine was simply part of everyday life, applying sunscreen before leaving the house could feel slightly absurd.


Then skincare culture changed. Today, sunscreen is everywhere. Dermatologists recommend it. Beauty brands put SPF into moisturisers, primers and foundations. TikTok routines end with two fingers of sunscreen. We are told to wear it every morning, reapply every two hours and sometimes even wear it indoors.


At the same time, another argument keeps resurfacing. Black people have melanin. We do not burn easily. Skin cancer is much less common in dark skin. So do we actually need sunscreen?


The answer is not as simple as either side of the internet makes it sound. Melanin really does protect darker skin. Skin-cancer risk really is different across skin tones. But darker skin is not immune to the effects of sunlight, and if you are trying to manage hyperpigmentation or melasma, the reason sunscreen matters becomes much more immediate.


There is also something else happening right now. Sunscreen technology is changing. Researchers are paying more attention to visible light, tinted sunscreens and darker skin, while newer UV filters are beginning to change what a good sunscreen can look and feel like.


So rather than telling everyone to wear sunscreen because “you just should,” it is more useful to understand what sunscreen is actually doing for your skin.


  1. Yes, melanin really does protect you

This part sometimes gets lost in sunscreen messaging. Melanin is not just what gives skin its colour. It also absorbs and disperses ultraviolet radiation before some of that radiation can damage cells. Darker skin therefore has more natural photoprotection than very fair skin. It tends to burn less readily, and many UV-associated skin cancers occur much less frequently in deeply pigmented populations. That is real biology.


But more protected does not mean completely protected. Darker skin can still experience ultraviolet damage, pigmentation changes and photoageing, and people with dark skin can still develop skin cancer. The risks are simply not identical across skin tones.


  1. The skin-cancer story deserves more nuance

A lot of sunscreen messaging begins and ends with skin cancer. For darker skin, that can oversimplify the evidence. Melanoma is much less common in Black populations than in white populations, and the relationship between ultraviolet exposure and melanoma is also less straightforward in skin of colour.


One systematic review looking specifically at melanoma and UV exposure in people with skin of colour found that most of the included studies did not show a significant association. The researchers concluded that the evidence was insufficient to say UV exposure plays the same role in melanoma risk in darker populations that it clearly does in lighter ones, while also pointing out weaknesses in the available research.


There is another reason the story differs. Acral melanoma, an important melanoma subtype in Black populations, tends to occur on places such as the palms, soles and around or beneath the nails. Those are not exactly the parts of the body getting the most sun. So telling a Black reader that wearing facial sunscreen is primarily about preventing melanoma does not capture the whole picture.


That does not mean ignoring suspicious changes in the skin. Skin cancer can occur in darker skin, and delayed recognition can be a serious problem. It simply means sunscreen needs a more intelligent argument and for many people with darker skin, that argument begins with something they are far more likely to encounter, "pigmentation."


  1. If dark marks are your problem, sunscreen suddenly makes much more sense

Imagine spending months trying to fade a mark left by acne while one part of your daily environment keeps encouraging your skin to make more pigment.


That is where light enters the story. Ultraviolet radiation can stimulate melanogenesis, the process through which skin produces melanin. For somebody prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or melasma, repeated light exposure can therefore work against whatever you are using to improve the pigmentation.


This is why sunscreen appears so frequently in dermatologists' pigmentation plans. But there is an interesting twist. UV is not the only light science cares about anymore.


  1. Visible light is one of the biggest shifts in the pigmentation conversation

Sunlight contains more than the ultraviolet radiation measured by traditional SPF testing.

It also contains visible light, the wavelengths our eyes can see.



This is particularly relevant if you have darker skin and it explains something that can otherwise sound like another beauty trend, "tinted sunscreen."


  1. Why everyone is suddenly talking about iron oxides

Traditional sunscreen filters are designed primarily around ultraviolet radiation. But if visible light can worsen pigmentation, someone treating melasma or stubborn dark marks may need to think beyond UV protection alone.



A newer review that searched the evidence through the end of 2024 reached a similar conclusion. Tinted sunscreens generally outperform non-tinted formulas at protecting against visible-light effects and can be useful in preventing melasma relapse. So if hyperpigmentation is one of the main reasons you are wearing sunscreen, a tinted formula containing iron oxides may offer something a transparent sunscreen does not.


That is genuinely useful information. It is also where the industry runs into a very obvious problem.


  1. “Universal tint” is not universal if it turns your face grey

If the scientific advice is that people with darker skin and pigment disorders may benefit from tinted sunscreen, then brands need to make tints darker-skinned people can actually wear.

That sounds obvious. It apparently has not been. The newer review of tinted sunscreens specifically identifies inadequate shade diversity as one of the barriers to their use in skin of colour.


A broader review of the sunscreen literature found something even more revealing. Researchers identified 5,927 sunscreen publications, but only 314, 5.3% specifically addressed skin of colour. Among those, clinical trials were particularly scarce. That helps explain why somebody with deep skin can stand in front of an entire wall of sophisticated sunscreens and still struggle to find one that does not leave them looking grey, purple or strangely orange.


A sunscreen you hate wearing is a sunscreen you probably won't use consistently.

Wearability is part of whether a health product works in real life.


  1. Lagos creates a very different sunscreen test from London

A sunscreen can perform beautifully on paper and still be awful at 2 p.m. in Lagos. Heat, humidity, sweat, and commuting matters. Whether you wear makeup matters. Whether the sunscreen leaves a white cast matters. So does whether it stings your eyes halfway through the day.


A person spending most of their working day in an air-conditioned office has a different exposure pattern from someone who works outdoors. Someone commuting for hours has a different day from someone working from home. A runner training outside at midday has different needs from someone leaving home briefly in the early morning.


Your location matters, but so does how you actually live in it. The practical question is not whether the sun exists where you live. It is how much exposure you are getting and what you are trying to protect your skin from.


  1. So, do you need SPF 50?

Maybe.


But the SPF number is one of the most misunderstood things on the bottle. SPF primarily describes protection against UVB, the wavelengths most associated with sunburn. It does not tell you everything about UVA protection, and it certainly does not tell you whether a product meaningfully protects against visible light.


That is why broad-spectrum protection matters. For ordinary daily use, dermatology guidance commonly recommends broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. The FDA likewise advises sunscreen alongside other sun-protective measures rather than treating sunscreen as a force field.


Here is the practical part people often miss. A beautifully formulated SPF 30 that you apply properly is more useful than an SPF 50 you hate so much that you barely use enough to cover your face. The number matters. Behaviour matters more than beauty marketing sometimes admits.


  1. What about sunscreen indoors?

This is where wellness advice can become unnecessarily obsessive. If you spend the entire day indoors, away from windows, you do not need to behave as though fluorescent office lighting is the midday sun. UVB is largely blocked by ordinary window glass, although UVA penetrates glass more effectively. Visible light obviously enters through windows too.


So context matters.


If you sit beside a bright window for hours and are actively managing melasma or pigmentation, daily photoprotection may make sense. If you spend most of the day well inside a building with minimal daylight exposure, the practical benefit is different.


You do not need to become afraid of windows. You do not need to turn sunscreen into another wellness ritual that makes ordinary life feel dangerous. The goal is sensible protection, not sun anxiety.


  1. Do you really have to reapply every two hours?

This is another recommendation that loses context once it reaches social media. The two-hour rule is especially relevant during continuous outdoor exposure, because sunscreen can be removed by sweat, water, rubbing and ordinary wear.


If you are outside for hours, exercising, swimming, sweating heavily or spending a day at the beach, reapplication matters. If you applied sunscreen before commuting to work and then spent six hours inside an office, your situation is not identical. This is one of those places where a technically simple health message gets turned into an unnecessarily rigid lifestyle rule. Use sunscreen intelligently around your actual exposure.


  1. What if you cannot afford an expensive sunscreen?

Then please do not allow skincare culture to convince you that sun protection belongs only to people who can spend heavily on beauty products. A broad-spectrum sunscreen you can afford and use properly is useful. But sunscreen is also not the only way to reduce exposure.

Shade, a hat, clothing, choosing not to spend unnecessary hours in intense midday sun works.


These interventions are not somehow inferior because nobody can sell them to you in a 50 ml bottle. Reject the idea that better living should become a luxury category. The goal is useful health intelligence that works whether someone is buying an entry-level pharmacy product or the newest premium formulation.


  1. If you are spending more, what should you actually pay for?

This is where expensive sunscreen should earn its price. Not through beautiful packaging, through better formulation. Perhaps it disappears properly on deep skin. Perhaps it has excellent UVA protection. Perhaps it includes iron oxides in a shade you can actually wear.


Perhaps it survives sweat well. Perhaps it sits beautifully under makeup. Perhaps it does not sting your eyes. Perhaps you genuinely enjoy using it enough to apply the correct amount. Those things can make a premium product worthwhile.


But a $60 sunscreen is not automatically six times better for your skin than a $10 one. The question is what the extra money is buying.


  1. Sunscreen technology is finally getting more interesting


The funny part is that bemotrizinol is not actually new. People using European and Asian sunscreens have had access to it for years. What is new is the American regulatory decision. Bemotrizinol provides broad UVA and UVB protection, is photostable and, according to the FDA's review, has low absorption through the skin and rarely causes irritation.


Why should someone outside America care? Because the story illustrates how quickly sunscreen technology and regulation can diverge between markets. The “best” sunscreen available in one country may contain filters that another country's regulatory system has not yet approved. The FDA's 2026 decision is effectively an acknowledgement that American sunscreen technology had been operating with a comparatively old filter toolkit.


It also matters for darker skin because modern organic filters can help formulators create lightweight products without the chalky white residue that has historically made some mineral sunscreens difficult to wear on deep skin. But BEMT does not suddenly make every older sunscreen obsolete.


It is another tool and the bigger trend is more interesting than the ingredient itself. Sunscreen is moving towards broader protection, better wearability and formulations people actually want to put on their skin.


  1. What about “chemical” versus mineral sunscreen?

This is another debate that becomes much less dramatic once you remove the internet language. Mineral sunscreens generally use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Organic filters often called “chemical sunscreens” use other molecules to absorb UV radiation.


One is not automatically “clean” while the other is toxic. Those are marketing categories masquerading as toxicology. Different filters have different evidence, absorption profiles, environmental questions, tolerability and cosmetic characteristics.


The FDA's assessment of bemotrizinol, for example, concluded that it provides UVA and UVB protection with low skin absorption and rare irritation. For the person standing in a pharmacy, the more useful questions are usually does it give you adequate protection? Does your skin tolerate it? Does it leave a cast? Will you actually wear it?


  1. What about vitamin D?

This is one of the more legitimate questions around very diligent sun avoidance. Your skin uses UVB radiation to produce vitamin D. Darker skin already requires more UV exposure to produce the same amount because melanin absorbs UV radiation. So concerns about vitamin D in darker-skinned populations, particularly people living in places with limited sunlight for parts of the year, should not simply be dismissed.


Deliberately exposing your skin to damaging amounts of UV is not the only way to address vitamin D. Diet, supplementation where appropriate and medical testing for people at risk are available. If you are worried about deficiency, particularly if you have darker skin and live somewhere with long, dark winters, that is a conversation worth having with a healthcare professional rather than a reason to abandon photoprotection entirely.


  1. So what should you actually buy?

Look for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher in a formulation you can comfortably afford and actually enjoy wearing. If you spend long periods outdoors, exercise outside or swim, look for appropriate water resistance and reapply as needed.


If hyperpigmentation or melasma is one of your main concerns, consider a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides, provided you can find a shade that works for your skin. Current evidence supports their additional protection against visible-light-induced pigmentation.


If the perfect sunscreen according to the internet leaves your face grey, makes your eyes water and costs so much that you use half the amount you need, it is not the perfect sunscreen for you. Choose another one.

63° Take

Does dark skin need sunscreen? Yes, but not because melanin somehow stopped working. Melanin gives darker skin meaningful natural protection. That should be acknowledged rather than erased in an attempt to make sunscreen messaging universal.


At the same time, natural protection is not complete. For many people with dark skin, the most immediately relevant reason to use sunscreen may not even be sunburn or melanoma. It may be hyperpigmentation. UV can stimulate pigment, and visible light can contribute too. That is why tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides have become particularly interesting for people dealing with melasma and stubborn pigmentation.


The science is also evolving. Only a small fraction of sunscreen research has historically focused specifically on skin of colour, so there are still gaps in what we know. Meanwhile, the technology is moving forward. Bemotrizinol's 2026 FDA approval is the latest example of newer-generation filters changing what sunscreen can offer, although the ingredient itself has been used elsewhere for years.


So 63°'s position is not that everybody should obsessively apply the highest SPF they can find from morning until night. Understand what you are protecting against. Choose protection appropriate to your skin, your environment and your actual life. And buy something you will use.


Established: Broad-spectrum sunscreen reduces UV exposure, and photoprotection is particularly relevant when managing photosensitive pigment disorders.


Established and increasingly useful: Visible light can contribute to pigmentation in darker skin, and tinted formulations containing iron oxides can provide protection that conventional UV-focused sunscreen may not.


New: Bemotrizinol was added to the U.S. sunscreen system in June 2026, bringing a photostable broad-spectrum filter already used elsewhere into the American market.


Still incomplete: Sunscreen research specifically involving darker skin remains disproportionately small, and recommendations should acknowledge those evidence gaps rather than pretending every question has already been answered.


And perhaps the most practical point is the best sunscreen is not the most expensive one, the one with the highest number on the bottle or the one everybody online is suddenly buying. It is the one that gives you the protection you need, works on your skin, fits your life and budget, and is comfortable enough that you actually use it.
